Brandt-Daroff Exercises For Benign Paroxymsal Positional Vertigo


  • Sit on the edge of the bed with eyes OPEN.

  • Turn your head 45 degrees to the RIGHT.

  • Quickly lie down on your RIGHT side; be sure to keep your head turned so that your nose points to the corner of the room.

  • Wait for at least 30 seconds to see if any vertigo (spinning) occurs. If it does, wait until the spinning stops plus another 30 seconds. Then quickly sit up.

  • You may have some vertigo or lightheadedness when you sit up. Again wait for the symptoms to stop plus wait another 30 seconds. If you do not have any vertigo or lightheadedness, just wait 30 seconds.

  • Now, turn your head 45 degrees to the LEFT.

  • Quickly lie down on your LEFT side; be sure to keep your head turned so that your nose points to the corner of the room.

  • Wait for at least 30 seconds to see if any vertigo (spinning) occurs. If it does, wait until the spinning stops plus another 30 seconds. Then quickly sit up. Again, you may have some vertigo or lightheadedness when you sit up. Again wait for the symptoms to stop plus wait another 30 seconds. If you do not have any vertigo or lightheadedness, just wait 30 seconds.

  • The entire sequence is repeated 3 times and is performed three times a day.

  • Continue to do the exercises until you have two days in a row in which you have no symptoms (vertigo/nausea).

  • Go from a sitting position to flat on your back

    (repeat 5 times)

  • Go from flat on your back to left side

    (repeat 5 times)

  • Go from your left side to your right side

    (repeat 5 times)

  • Go from flat on your back to a sitting position

    (repeat 5 times)

  • From a standing position turn body to right

    (repeat 5 times)

  • From a standing position, turn body to left

    (repeat 5 times)

  • From a sitting position, touch nose to left knee

    (repeat 5 times)

  • From a sitting position, turn head to left

    (repeat 5 times)

  • From a sitting position, turn head to right

    (repeat 5 times)

  • From a sitting position, bend forward

    (repeat 5 times)

  • From a sitting position, stand up straight

    (repeat 5 times)

  • From a sitting position, move head up and down

    (repeat 5 times)

  • Sitting on side of head, turn head to right and lie down quickly

    (repeat 5 times)

  • Sitting on side of bed, turn head to left and lie down quickly

    (repeat 5 times)

  • Sitting on side of bed, lie down quickly-head hanging over to side of bed

    (repeat 5 times)

* If dizziness occurs during any steps, stay in that position until the dizziness subsides, then resume exercises. Do entire series at least twice a week.
